Antikvárium @ Pólya Street

Not too long ago, we discovered this antikvárium (Hungarian for second-hand book shop). If not mistaken, this is the only surviving one in town. As you can see the place is cramped which gave me a headache initially but I found 2 books within minutes of browsing! *satisfied*
The owner is a friendly chap (who keeps talking!). He told us that he prefers to trade for collections of pooms and classics. Erm... hopefully, he'll continue to carry other catergories for our sakes ;)

Taken a seat?

Are you comfortable in your seats? (refers to yesterday's photo) okay..close your eyes and take some time off to enjoy the peace and quiet or
you can walk about... straight out of those glass doors, on your left, you'll find a stage where most of the open-air concerts, choir, musical performances usually takes place.
While on a normal afternoon/evening, it is mainly populated with teenagers/kids practising bmx-stunts /chating ...basically just to hang out after school.

Two to tango

Love the retro aspect of these seats. Although they might have been there before the comeback of retro style. Look at it, its in perfect condition and I quite fancy it in my home.
.
The place functions as culture centre utilised mainly for dance, musical training and etc. Strange for me is why only two seats are arranged in this spacious area and not more?
.
Tomorrow I'll show the view from these seats.

Impression

My partner said that I've portrayed Szentes as a under developed village due to my frequent postings of "ruins" :p, such as the structure shown above.

Have to admit I am particularly fond of older and one of its kind (in the town) structures. This one, for example appears to function as a house. Imagine having such a facade and dome for your home! If only i have the chance to view the interior...how can I not post it here?

So, let me ask you dear regulars visitors, what's your impression of Szentes through this blog?

New development @ Kisér Street 2

What impressed me most about this sign is the stainless steel material with the proposed building beautiful etched on it. Kudos to the developer for designing a classic ornamented facade at this day and age..can't wait to see the finished building soon.

Couldn't post yesterday due to computer under repair..wish you a wonderful weekend!

New season

Training has begun for the canoeing team. We've seen lots of action from them in this blog. Let's all wish them a good season this year.

On a different note, one of my visitors, Istvan has taken the liberty to find more info. on these statues. His friend helped to confirm the background and existence of the 'pick and shovel men' (kubikusok). To those who are interested, you can now read about it at the sidebar. (<<) .

Feedback/assistance such as this definitely makes maintaining this blog more worth while. Köszönöm Szépen Istvan and Andras!

Yeah...bird(s) again

Nothing much to write today, except to quote...

"Ornithologists (what?) have observed 172 bird species since 1983, around the 122 hectare Lake Termál, which is 5km outside the town."

It was interesting to read your views towards yesterday's post and days before. will reply to them later of the day. Feeling out of focus at the moment.

Pano - a short review

I have posted about Panorama café sometime ago. It has relaunched recently with a new look & name -Pano Café.

First impression, well..Good! but it feels like a clone with the high back chairs and minimalist look ; very similar to the many semi-posh cafés found in cities of Hungary. Is it the same trend/decor. in your city? anyway, i thought it had lost the character it once possessed.

Upon trying the café, it actually feels more inviting and comfortable than before. Best of all the prices have been kept reasonable. I also saw 2 (or more?) slot machines at the back room..erm, what was that about?

Conversation with stranger

One can fetch drinking water again from this fountain; although I haven't tried it myself...just haven't been daring enough :p
.
After the photo session, I moved on to do some window shopping. A stranger, an elderly man, stopped my partner and suggested that we should really be shopping for wedding gown, because we look "good" together... ??? how can he tell we're not married?... of course my partner thanked him while feeling abit akward of the situation. People here are really vocal of their opinions, at least good opinions..heheheh
.
How's your Sunday? Me, I'm stuffed with delicious lunch of rakott krumpli (potatoes& eggs casserole)!

Hold your horses! Don't bring out your sun lounger yet. There're only enough sand to keep half a dozen kids happy at this newly (few months old) installed playground. Happy weekend!

Homecoming 2

Headlines - Storks are back! The town's radio and on-line portal reported few days ago. Everyone loves the storks, including me!
.
The beloved stork family has returned to their summer home. They seems to be settling well at the newly renovated arts and crafts facility, appropriately re-named Gólyás Ház (stork house).

I'm never tired of reporting them as you can see more in my last year's archive :-

Green green grass

Out on a public field, the green is restful, tempting me to take off my shoes and feel the morning grass..fresh and recharges. Have you tried doing that?

Oh, all I could hear now is the grass cutter working outside (since 8am)..so long, dandelions, but I know you'll be back soon enough :)

Still unknown

The nice sunny afternoon slowly taken away from us. Oh nevermind, as least I caught this image. As I mentioned before, I still have no info. on the two guys (silhouette). Anyway, I think today they are cheering Boldog névnapot (Happy nameday) to our Zsolt !

Update Apr, 17 2007 . Istvan provided the following info.
I just confirmed it with a high school friend, the two figures are 'pick and shovel men' (kubikusok). I think it is a tribute to these hard working men whose meager income many families relied on in the great plane of Hungary where industrial jobs were non-existent.Among other major construction projects, they built the dike system along the rivers like the Tisza near by, and as my friend, Andras, points out some of them made it to Germany to work on the autobahn system in the early part of the 20th century. It supposedly depicts the class of these pick and shovel men as they just have been 'freed of their chains' at the dawn of communism.

What i did on Easter holidays

School's off for Easter holidays, leaving me a free wall to play photography. If you must know it is a wall of red bricks, you know those boxy kind of building. Looking at it now with a person (see him?) for scale, the wall is so much bigger than what i see almost daily.

Location : Zsoldos Ferenc Technical Vocational School.

Gnome sweet gnome

"A gnome is a cute, legendary creature characterized by its very small size and subterranean lifestyle"

This garden gnome or manó mano as we call it (or as zsolt pointed out törpe too :), appeared to have been super-sized; standing at approx. 2 ft. tall! still cute nonetheless. Do you have one hidden in your garden?

Happy Sunday to all and Happy Easter !

Go vegetarian

Found at some random road signs. The sticker says Go vegetarian!
as for Murder king (in reference to a fast food brand?), in my opinion it is a harsh accusation. We don't have that fast food chain in place here in the town, by the way.

Happy weekend to all !

FYI
According to a non-representative survey there are 150.000 vegetarians in Hungary.

Happy weekend and Easter!

What I want to see

In case you're wondering, what's with the dark edges.. the wonderful colours of these tulips caught my attention through a hole of a wooden fence whilst on my way to belly dancing class yesterday. My first tulips of the season.

I know its spring and all, gosh, my eyes , something is wrong with my eyes..all I want to see is black and white; at least on my photos. see photo in colour , too.

Preview

Entering through this arch, i'm entering the back of Petőfi building. There's nothing but a neglected backyard, yet the facade is new to my eyes. I'll show you the complete facade when I get a nicer shot of it. Meanwhile, i'm lucky to have a model posing (reluctantly) for me :D

The side walk racer, no more?

I'm completely obsessed with sepia and lomo mood at the moment; so, bear with me :) These boys (some girls) have this little space for their "extreme" sports. Sure its a bit dingy..at least it is safer than the streets. Good news is, there are plans to build them a proper facility.

whirring sound an inch above the ground;
I'm the sailor and the sail,
I'm the driver arid the wheel

Restoration Update #3

Theatre goers gathering outside the town's theatre, making the streets much livelier yesterday afternoon. The crowd grew bigger later..I wonder which play is on?

The last news I heard was this row of structure is due to be renewed (it is slowly falling apart!), except that no developer has shown interests in undertaking the project. Oh, come on! surely someone can think of some bright idea to turn this into a place of interests.
