Tired as ....

I'm sooo late for today's post! For the whole of the morning-noon, I was doing some baking for a friend's birthday. Finally I have the time to drink a cuppa and cruise around the world. I bet your weekend is much more relaxing than mine ;)

Inside 19th century urban house

Does this photo trigger your interest in taking a free tour inside the urban house?
click YES / NO to continue ..

That's where we were yesterday. After paying less than 2 Euro, we gained entrance to the lovely 176 year-old house. The place formerly belonged to Dr. Péter Pál where he had his practice, giving medical attention to the anyone that walked into his clinic/house. Treating rich and poor alike. Oh, what a great man/house ;)

Corporate Hungary

A truck baring this sign was parked infront of the abandoned hotel. For me, this is a refreshing sight. The contemporary design against the ruins created such a constrast of past and future. Also, it gives a touch of modernity to the town.. although am not quite sure what's a female face got to do with selling paper?

Pigeons scaring system

got to give my partner credit for thinking up the title ..lol!
Pigeons' poo are nearly everywhere. Its not only nuisance, its hazardous to health (in long run). The town hall is planning to install mild electrodes in areas where pigeons are heavily populated to keep them away. Am not familiar with the system, I do hope it is a safe method :)

ps. have an appointment with hair dresser in 15 mins. Read you posts later ;)

Darling, here's a cookie.. we're engaged!

According to folklore, those days the heart-shaped honey cookies were given to lovers as a symbol of their engagement. Yours truly has one in the display unit ...but as a food lover, I just wanna grab a bite :p
The lovely cookies were baked and decorated by local artist, Mrs. István Kovács. She is also well known for her furniture paintings and souvenir craft. See her exquisite work in extra.

Real horse power

It's not a common sight, but I recognise the couple and am lucky to catch them on their horse carriage, this time. They're probably out of towner in town for some groceries shopping or deliver their crops. Whatever it is, seeing them is like turning back time...

Competition...nah

aw...look at that face, priceless!
When i caught this shot, i thought of holding a competition to give away post cards n' such. Seeing its a Sunday, I thought ...nah! too lazy to go around informing everyone about it. For fun sake, whoever is visiting, can you guess how tall is the thing the boy is climbing? No cheating! think of an answer in your mind...Ok. see another photo here to get the sense of scale.

These inflated thingy are increasingly popular during the town's festival. Is it the same at your town/city?

Rain dancers

would you have believed if I had told you these guys were performing infront (or below) the statue whilst i took Monday's photo? That's right, see for yourself here.

ho ma hey ya, ho ma hey ya hey..hey hey hey...All the way from Ecuador
, their music created a soothing atmosphere amidst all the other activities at Saturday's autumn festival . Yeah, I bought their CD and its sure worth it!

I have seen similar performances in other cities of Hungary. Have they visited your town/city yet?

huh?

unexplainable stickers can be found on lamp posts regularly but this has got to be the strangest one. I'm talking about the square sticker. Perhaps some guy went to a workshop/seminar where he got that name tag and left it there. Then, what is the connection with "Not legal"....anyone care to break the code?

Uncertainties

I'm uncertain what will become of this building, a former museum for town's archive (moved to newer facility) . As like I'm uncertain with what will be the outcome of the current political conflict of the country. Being a foreigner may not earn me the right to say this : to the protestors (in Budapest), be calm and please do it peacefully, bringing anger to the streets will only halt the country from finding a long term solution..

A few good men (I)

Statues, a mundane topic, I guess its an unavoidable one. They represent the vital personnel behind the making of the town to where it is now. Its an interesting task to photograph them in different light of the day...first, I introduce..
Horváth Mihály Oct 20,1809 (szentes) - Aug 19, 1978* (karlsbad)
he was a bishop, historian and politician..
and the founder of nationally known local theatre & language school .
In another angle, the statue looks like Pope John Paul II, don't you think?
*oops! Correction : 1878

Another festival = diet postponed

why is that when you declared you're going on diet, free food come your way?
This girl greeted us with some mini scones at yesterday's festival, which was hard to decline. It's delicious by the way :) We're celebrating the begining of autumn (? not sure really). Anyway, my point of this photo is to show the traditional costume she's wearing (see full length photos here) . Nice ain't it?

Love-hate

I have this love-hate feelings for buildings from the 60's-70's. Example in this photo, the 40 year-old building stick out like a sore thumb. The concrete colour is lifeless and in this instance, blocking the view of the evening sky. On the other hand, it once represented the future and making it part of our history. Finally, not forgetting, I was baby of that generation..

Arabian night

Our dance teacher at the opening of pedestrian square recently.

Quote from the town's official booklet
"....large number of programs are the characteristics of the every day life in Szentes" .....which is true. In fact, thank goodness for all these programmes, otherwise I don't know how I'll carry on with this daily posting. Here's to more festivals , cheers!

What a girl wants....

outside the entrance of county hall..

Whatever happened to throwing rice at newly weds? Are these heart-shaped confetti the "in" thing now? I'm so out of touch..well, I guess majority of brides do dream of fairy tale wedding.

stork, stork, stork

Am posting photo of these fascinating creatures for the 3rd time. Can't help it as they're visiting our town only for spring/summer plus I'm always curious at what their doing. Another interesting thing is how they co-existed with the construction workers without any trouble (you must see this) . They are gone now (2 weeks ago) and the building work is finished but their nest remains. To the stork - will see you next year, yeah!

Anticipation

Months after I blogged about the Petőfi building, I learnt that finally the town hall has won the long legal case in gaining the rights to restore & develope it into a hotel again. Work is scheduled to begin next year; hence, I took this "before" photo and fingers crossed that SzentesDP will survive to report the completion in 2008!

Dry is going..

yesterday's sweat
blown all away
by today's sun
Laundry service is almost non-existent here since nearly every household owns a washing machine. Before the wet weather takes over, I'm using every bit of the sun shine to clear the laundry :) Happy Sunday!
Word of appreciation :-
*Mandy has been so kind to write me this haiku on short notice. I think she did a great job describing the photo, don't you think?

Be cool!

I didn't know that the police wear t-shirts these days. Policemen in ala CHIPs* style uniform is what I'm used to *wink*..with additional jacket on rainy/cold days. I guess it make sense for the remaining summer days..cool! What about your city/town?

*you do know chips the tv series , right?

Changing

That single cloud was hanging there, luring me to take this shot..
Soon the crane will be gone, the building (read earlier post about it) shall be ready for its tenants of about 50 physically handicapped & elders to move in , right before winter.

Never say never...

...I requested the teacher to allow me to take photo in class, Iwas so nervous that most photos were blurry

Never say never to learning belly dancing. You see, I have what people call 2 left feet. Morever, I'm completely hopeless when required to remember dance routine! 40 lessons later, no doubt I still have much to improve but I'm enjoying it!
Without Éva* many of us wouldn't have had the opportunity to learn this alternative exercise and me, realising I do have a wee bit of potential in dancing ..haha

calling street performers!

Works have just been completed in converting Nagy Ferenc street into a car-free zone. I love the idea of pedestrian streets and I think it is an essential feature for city life whereby people can have breathing space amidst the city centre. It may not so much apply to our town living environment comparing to big cities; but hey, shopping without traffic is always a plus. Oh, one thing is missing though, we need street artists to complete the picture ;-)

Siesta ended

Recognise the man in red? You might remember him from my post on election campaign some months back. Yes, that's the mayor doing his "thing", joining about 100 others in Lecsó cooking competition yesterday. You may sample any participants' cooking by bringing along a container and you'll be served together with fresh bread..yum!

Lecsó (Lecho) = paprika & tomato stew

FYI i've recently migrated to blogger beta version and the system doesnt allow commenting on non-beta blogs (which is driving me nuts!) ThereforE, I wont be able to comment for time being on the non-beta blogs, if your setting doesnt allow "other" or "anonymous" commenting . On the same basis, I think some of you may not be able to comment on mine. However, you may choose to comment under the "other" category ..either way, I thank you for visiting.

Siesta

Once a year a day is dedicated to the popular Hungarian dish Lecsó (lecho) in our town, that is today. However, this year's celebration will lasts for 2 days, beginning last night. On top of that we get better variety of programmes as well as diversity in terms of the performers (first time i see brazilian dancers here). Hope we'll continue to embrace diversity in this town.
Cooking competition coming up this afternoon..stay tune for tomorrow!

Have free time? click to see my fave pics. from the festival :)

DP Theme Day : Doorways

Many times I wanted to steal my way inside this apartment building; because of the lovely 30's style entrance (only one in town). Of course I have no chance due to the password protected lock. Behind it is another doorway and if you peep closer, you might see a small courtyard . It keeps me wondering how the atmosphere would be like inside....
