CDP Theme day ~ Beauty of decay 4/4 Petőfi Hotel
For this theme , we knew that we have to feature this important but decaying landmark of the town.
Since 2006, this blog has been documenting the restoration works of this former hotel. We even took a "before" photo in anticipation of the planned restoration.
You might think, well, that roof doesn't look so bad or the signage is still kind of standing. Talking about the sign, its gorgeous, isn't it? To show you how much beauty is left of this building, we have posted 3 more photos prior to the theme day (scroll down this blog) for you to take in the details and background story of this yet-to-happen restoration.
To see all entries from around the world, please visit here
ps. as its the weekend, I'll visit your blogs later , got to prep. for guests :)

Beauty of decay 3/4 Petőfi Hotel
At that time, the building was 107 years old. Seven years on, after some initial works of stripping, the project came to a halt several years ago. There were problems with the project manager, so we heard.
Because of the long delays, the building now looks worse than before! However, if you look closer, we believe you will find beauty in the decay ;) We're posting a series of 4 photos to show you some remaining details.

#369 - Petőfi Hotel - Update
Good news to those who haven't been inside the defunct hotel. Pendola (company managing the restoration project) decided to open the premises to the public on 29 November between 09:00 and 15:00. So, don't loose the opportunity.
You may bring along any photos about the ex-hotel on the mentioned date. It may be chosen to be exhibited on the day!
A press conference will also be held at 17.00pm before moving forward with the project.

#366 - Getting started...
I was delighted to read an update on the restoration of the former Petőfi Hotel from the on-line portal. While returning to Szentes for a visit last weekend, I took the opportunity to snap this banner. The banner is to signify a new beginning, a co-operation between Pendola (the project company) and Szentes town on the work of restoration!
.
What can we expect by the end of the restoration ...
1) A 4-star hotel with the usual restaurant & pub.
2) Turkish bath
3) Squash court
4) Gym
5) Childcare centre
6) Casino (sorry, cant say i agree with having this...but i guess it'll create more employments)
..
Before the works begin in 2008, sadly we'll have to say good bye to the popular Petőfi café & confectionery, which is located at the same building. My partner's father will have to look for another café for his morning coffee and pool gatherings. Also, a furnishing shop will have to be relocated as well.
.
Cheers, for a fresh beginning!
That's all for now..will keep updating here ;)

The side walk racer, no more?
The Sidewalk Racer
-- By Lillian Morrison
Skimming
an asphalt sea
I swerve, I curve, Isway; I speed to
whirring sound an inch above the ground;
I'm the sailor and the sail,
I'm the driver arid the wheel
I'm the one and only
single engine
human auto
mobile.

Restoration Update #3
Theatre goers gathering outside the town's theatre, making the streets much livelier yesterday afternoon. The crowd grew bigger later..I wonder which play is on?
The last news I heard was this row of structure is due to be renewed (it is slowly falling apart!), except that no developer has shown interests in undertaking the project. Oh, come on! surely someone can think of some bright idea to turn this into a place of interests.

Progress?
I bet you , you didn't know how many traffic lights are there in your city/town! well, me neither, until last night. I was told that the only place that's equiped with the lights is at the cross junction and so I counted them in my head = 8 traffic lights for the whole town!!
The news is, soon the lights might go and replaced with a round-about due to the low traffic flow; however, it is still in proposal stage. Personally, I think the move would be a step backward ...

Anticipation
Months after I blogged about the Petőfi building, I learnt that finally the town hall has won the long legal case in gaining the rights to restore & develope it into a hotel again. Work is scheduled to begin next year; hence, I took this "before" photo and fingers crossed that SzentesDP will survive to report the completion in 2008!

Reviving the beauty

Everytime I pass this building, i ask myself "Why is it not being restored ?" It's really sad and waste to abandon such an architectural beauty . This 107 year-old building was formerly a hotel. Currently only the theatre house is still in operation. Hopefully the owner would do something about it ,soon !
